(CNN) - A grisly discovery was made in Washington state.
The Humane Society for Tacoma andamp; Pierce County says workers rescued about 100 cats from an abandoned apartment in Federal Way, a city near Seattle.
The cats were living in filth.
The humane society says many of the cats were infested with fleas and did not have food or water to drink.
It is still unclear how so many cats ended up in the apartment.
Officials say each cat will undergo an exam, vaccinations, spay or neutering, and other care before people can adopt them.
The humane society says it already is caring for hundreds of animals and the discovery of the abandoned cats is putting a strain on the group’s resources.
