ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Gwinnett County police are investigating after a pregnant 16-year-old was found dead on Monday.
At around 1 a.m., officers were called to the 3600 block of Stephens Road, a largely residential area, in Loganville. Mia Campos’ family had found her body in a wooded area off the side of the road using a cellphone tracking app, according to police.
Her father, Edward Campos, said she was found less than a mile away from their home.
“I found my daughter laid face down,” he said. “It was hard. I knew it was something wrong – her lips, her bleeding nose. They murdered my baby.”
The family said Campos left the house the night before with an unknown person. Campos’ death was ruled a homicide on Tuesday.
Jesus Monroy, Campos’ ex-boyfriend, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with giving false statements to police, according to Gwinnett police. Officers said Monroy is not currently a suspect.
Family members have confirmed Monroy was the father of the child.
Police have also declined to comment on how Campos died.
Campos’ father says he is confident the truth will be revealed.
“Justice is coming, soon,” he said.
Miriam Zárate, Campos’ mother, is looking to raise $50,000 for her daughter’s funeral.
“I ask God to watch over her and her baby,” she wrote in the online fundraiser. “Now she and my grandson are in heaven with God.”
Officers are asking anyone with information about Campos’ death to call detectives at (770) 513-5300. To remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers by calling (404) 577-TIPS (8477) or submitting an online report. Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment.
