ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A 2-year-old boy has died after accidentally shooting himself — and the boy’s father is now facing charges in connection to the shooting, according to the DeKalb County Police Department.
The shooting incident happened on the 1900 block of Shamrock Drive in Decatur shortly before 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Police said the child was taken to a hospital with a life-threatening injury before he died.
The child’s father, Michael Labiran, 39, was charged with felony murder and second-degree cruelty to children. He was taken to the DeKalb County Jail.
Police said they believe the child’s father left his firearm unsecured and the child found it.
“Families, kids are always running around, so to come home to this is devastating, you know? You just think about the kids running around. Playing all summer. To know this is an even younger child. It’s very emotional,” said AJ, a neighbor.
