ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - As Floridians continue to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Milton, people and businesses of all kinds in metro Atlanta are opening their doors to help.
“I think we had double, maybe triple, our number of dancers,” said Serena Chu, a faculty member with the Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education on Marietta Boulevard.
They’re helping their counterparts from Harid Conservatory in Florida pirouette during Hurricane Milton.
The conservatory, located in Boca Raton, called earlier this week asking for help for its students, who live in dormitories and train.
“They don’t have to think about the outside while in the studio," Chu said. “They can just focus on their day-to-day routines every day.”
That’s important for a profession that requires six hours of training per day, six days per week.
“Every day practice is really important to be consistent,” Chu said.
It’s also crucial for kids 14 to 18, whose minds and hearts are hundreds of miles to the south.
“We’re more than happy to host them while they’re here,” Chu said.
The training here could last as little as a couple of days or multiple weeks.
It’s not home but it is en pointe for the careers these dancers know can’t be washed away.
“We have an open-door policy,” Chu said.
