An 18-year-old is dead after being shot by a Clayton County police officer at a home in Rex on Monday.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation released new details about the shooting on Tuesday afternoon.

Hakim Al-Nas, 18, was pronounced dead at an area hospital from his injuries, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Clayton County Police Chief Kevin Roberts says the officer who pulled the trigger has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Chief Roberts said four teens, between the ages of 16 and 18, entered a vacant home in the 3200 block of Chippewa Drive around 4:30 p.m. Monday. Neighbors who saw the quartet of teens crawling in through the window called 911 immediately.

When officers arrived, Chief Roberts said all the teens were ordered to come out of the home. The GBI says two of those teens were seen climbing out of the back window of the home while two others remains inside.

Chief Roberts said one of those teen was armed and refused to comply with an officer. The chief said that the officer repeatedly told the teen to drop the weapon, but he kept running.

Details of the exact series of events leading to the deadly shooting have not been released.

Preliminary information released by the GBI indicates the teens were behind the home at the time officers encountered them and Al-Nas was shot multiple times.

GBI agents say a handgun was recovered at the scene.

Chief Roberts says three other teens, two 18 and one 16, were taken into custody. Their identities were not immediately released either.

The chief could not immediately speak about whether the teens had a prior criminal history.

No other injuries were reported.

The GBI has been asked to review the deadly use of force in the case. The probe will be submitted to the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
