Atlanta, GA — This Sunday, Sept. 29, is move-in day for the new Children’s Health Care of Atlanta Arthur M. Blank Hospital.

The hospital will move all patients from Egleston Hospital, on Clifton Road, to the new campus on North Druid Hills Road. The press was invited to tour the new hospital last month. Arthur M. Blank Hospital is a 19-story, 2 million-square-foot facility with 446 beds—116 more than at Egleston Hospital, a press release from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta says.

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is coordinating with state and local partners to accommodate dozens of ambulances that will start running at 7 a.m., transferring 340 patients to the new hospital. According to Children’s, about 30 patients from the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Scottish Rite Hospital in Sandy Springs will also move to the Arthur M. Blank Hospital. The move is expected to take all day.

“City of Atlanta, Emory University Police, DeKalb County, City of Chamblee, City of Brookhaven, Sandy Springs Police and Georgia State Police will help ensure patients travel safety during the move,” a press release about the move says. “Children’s is asking for the public’s help by yielding to ambulances along the move route from Egleston Hospital to Arthur M. Blank Hospital on Move Day. The route includes Uppergate Drive to Starvine to Clairmont Rd to 1-85 Frontage Road. Approximately 30 patients from the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Scottish Rite Hospital will move to Arthur M. Blank Hospital. They will travel from Meridian Mark to Johnson Ferry Road to Peachtree Dunwoody Road to GA-400 to I-85N to Arthur M. Blank Hospital.”

All other Children’s campuses besides Egleston will remain open. The Egleston and Arthur M. Blank hospitals are 2.6 miles away from each other, but the move itself will require six miles of traveling.

Children’s has backup plans for its backup plans to ensure seamless service to patients. The entire move has been planned minute-by-minute, with Egleston continuing to offer services until the move is completed. Local churches along the route will hold virtual services that day or use different parking lots to ensure things go smoothly. The public is urged to avoid the area during the move.

A spokesperson for the hospital recently sent out an advisory reminding officials about the move and telling the public what it can do to help. Here’s the full advisory, which was forwarded to Decaturish:

When is Move Day?

— Move Day will take place on Sunday, September 29, 2024.

What will happen on Move Day?

— At 7 a.m. on September 29, Arthur M. Blank Hospital will open, and Egleston Hospital’s emergency department will close.

— Children’s anticipates moving 340 patients from Egleston to Arthur M. Blank Hospital using 65 ambulances.

— In addition to Egleston patients, approximately 30 patients from the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Scottish Rite Hospital will move to Arthur M. Blank Hospital.

— Children’s anticipates Move Day will last 12 hours.

— Scottish Rite Hospital and Hughes Spalding Hospital will continue operating as usual.

How can the community help?

— The best way to help Children’s on Move Day is to yield to ambulances that are transporting patients near Egleston, Arthur M. Blank and Scottish Rite Hospitals.

— Community volunteers are not needed on Move Day. Children’s employees have been training for months and are prepared.

— While Children’s always appreciates the kindness and generosity of our community, we ask that no deliveries are made to either Egleston Hospital or Arthur M. Blank Hospital that day.
