ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - June 19 isn’t just any other day — it’s Juneteenth!
The Emancipation Proclamation, which freed enslaved people in the United States, took effect in 1863. But in Confederate-controlled territories, freedom wouldn’t come until much later, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
On June 19, 1865, Union troops came to Texas and announced that more than 250,000 people were now free. That day is now known as Juneteenth, established as a federal holiday in 2021.
