CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Outdoor activities for Clayton County Public Schools have been canceled this week due to recent heat index alerts, the district announced on Monday.

In a release, officials noted the potential for high heat index values for metro Atlanta from July 8 through July 12.

In addition, there is also a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms.

School officials added that parents should "ensure their children are dressed in appropriate clothing and have access to water so they are properly hydrated."

High heat index values could make some people more susceptible to heat illness like heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself hydrated. Also, take breaks from the heat and find a way to cool down to give your body a break.

A Heat Advisory is currently in effect Monday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. for counties east and south of the Atlanta metro area. Temperatures and humidity continue to climb through the week, and additional heat alerts may be issued. Heat index values could reach 106 degrees.
