LET’S TURN THINGS OVER TO METEOROLOGIST DEREK SIBLEY. DEREK, THIS IS DEFINITELY A STORM THAT NOBODY WANTS TO SEE COMING. NO, UNFORTUNATELY NOT TRAVERS. IT WILL HAVE IMPLICATIONS HERE. AND ALONG THE FLORIDA PANHANDLE FOR SURE. AS THE SYSTEM CONTINUES TO ENTER INTO THE GULF OF MEXICO AND CONDITIONS WILL ONLY CONTINUE TO IMPROVE. UNFORTUNATELY FOR THE SYSTEM. BUT THE WEATHER IS GOING TO GET BAD HERE FOR THE FLORIDA PANHANDLE HERE IN 24 HOURS, ESPECIALLY. HERE’S A LIVE VISIBLE HIGH RES LOOP OF HELENE RIGHT NOW GETTING VERY CLOSE TO THE YUCATAN PENINSULA. THERE YOU CAN SEE THAT LITTLE SWIRL THAT IS THE CENTER OF THE CIRCULATION. THE EYE HERE LOOKS LIKE IT’S POPPING UP. AND NOW MOVING INTO THE GULF OF MEXICO. PLENTY OF HEAVY SHOWER AND THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SYSTEM. AND YOU CAN SEE IT WRAPPING AROUND THAT CENTER OF CIRCULATION AS IT CONTINUES TO MOVE AGAIN HERE INTO THE GULF OF MEXICO. ALMOST A NICE CIRCULAR LOOKING STORM HERE RIGHT NOW. YOU CAN SEE THE OUTFLOW HERE EXPANDING ON ALL FOUR QUADRANTS OF THE SYSTEM HERE AS WELL. ALL RIGHT. SO HERE’S THE LATEST ADVISORY FROM THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER AS OF 10:00. MOVING TOWARDS THE NORTH NORTHWEST AT TEN, IT HAS WINDS OF 80 MILES AN HOUR EXPECTED TO BECOME A CATEGORY TWO HURRICANE BY THIS EVENING WITH WINDS OF ABOUT 100 MILES AN HOUR. AND THEN IT COULD POTENTIALLY BECOME A MAJOR HURRICANE AS WE HEAD INTO TOMORROW MORNING AROUND 8:00, WITH WINDS POTENTIALLY OF 120 MILES AN HOUR, AND THEN CONTINUING TO MOVE TOWARDS THE NORTH, A LANDFALL EXPECTED SOMEWHERE ALONG THE FLORIDA PANHANDLE, VERY, VERY CLOSE TO THE TALLAHASSEE AREA OF FLORIDA STATE CAPITAL. THERE, AS WE HEAD INTO THURSDAY EVENING AND THEN AFTER THAT, IT’S GOING TO CONTINUE TO MOVE NORTH. COULD STILL BE A TROPICAL STORM BY THE TIME IT REACHES NORTHERN GEORGIA. AND EVENTUALLY WEAKENING TO A TROPICAL DEPRESSION, A REMNANT LOW. AND THAT KIND OF THING. AS WE HEAD TOWARDS LATER IN THE WEEK, WE STILL HAVE LOTS OF TROPICAL ALERTS. IN EFFECT, WE GOT TROPICAL ALERTS IN EFFECT HERE FOR WESTERN CUBA. HURRICANE WARNINGS IN EFFECT FOR PORTIONS OF THE NORTHEASTERN YUCATAN PENINSULA AND UP NORTH TOWARDS THE FLORIDA AREA. LOTS OF TROPICAL STORM WARNINGS UP AND DOWN THE STATE HERE, INCLUDING LAKE OKEECHOBEE HURRICANE WARNINGS IN EFFECT HERE FOR THE BIG BEND AND ALSO PORTIONS OF THE WESTERN FLORIDA PANHANDLE THERE, AND ALSO TROPICAL STORM WARNINGS EXTEND AS FAR NORTH HERE. SOUTH CAROLINA. TROPICAL STORM WATCH HERE, IN EFFECT FOR PORTIONS OF SOUTH CAROLINA THERE AS WELL. THEY COULD BE LOOKING AT AROUND 10 TO 15FT OF STORM SURGE HERE ALONG THE FLORIDA BIG BEND, 4 TO 8FT OF SURGE HERE NEAR THE TAMPA AREA AND AROUND 3 TO 5FT HERE OF STORM SURGE NEAR THE FORT MYERS REGION. AS FAR AS OUR LOCAL WEATHER, THOUGH, WE’RE NOT DEALING WITH THE HURRICANE, THANK GOODNESS, BUT WE’RE JUST LOOKING AT A COUPLE OF SHOWERS HERE BEGINNING TO POP UP THERE ALONG THE NORTH SHORE. THAT’S ACTUALLY FROM A FRONTAL BOUNDARY EXPECTED TO MOVE INTO THE AREA AS WE HEAD INTO TONIGHT. CURRENT TEMPERATURES RIGHT NOW AT 88 DEGREES. YOU CAN IGNORE THAT IN BELLE CHASSE NOT 109, THAT IS FOR SURE. LOOKS LIKE A TEMPERATURE ERROR. THERE. IT’S FEELING LIKE INTO THE 90S THOUGH. CURRENTLY THAT FRONTAL BOUNDARY IS GOING TO CONTINUE TO MAKE ITS WAY TOWARDS THE SOUTH. AND YOU CAN SEE AS IT MOVES THROUGH MAYBE A COUPLE OF SHOWERS THERE AS IT BEGINS TO MOVE THROUGH. AND THEN BY TOMORROW MORNING WE’RE IN THE CLEAR HERE, MAYBE A COUPLE OF CLOUDS LEFT OVER, BUT OVERALL VERY DRY, TRANQUIL, QUIET LIGHT CONDITIONS HERE ACROSS THE REGION. AS WE TAKE YOU THROUGH THE REST OF THIS WEEK, ALONG WITH SOME COOLER TEMPERATURES AND OVERALL, MOSTLY SUNNY WEATHER CONDITIONS. HERE’S YOUR OFFICIAL WDSU FIRST WARNING SEVEN DAY FORECAST. WE GOT THOSE HIGH TEMPERATURES INTO THE LOW 90S TODAY, BUT DROPPING INTO THE 80S FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK. MOSTLY SUNNY, BREEZY. THURSD

How Hurricane Helene could impact travel for Saints fans going to Atlanta this weekend
Do you plan on heading out to Atlanta before the start of the weekend to watch the Saints take on the Falcons? Keep your eyes peeled for the weather. Hurricane Helene is on track to hit the Big Bend of Florida Thursday afternoon as a Category 3. By the time it moves to Atlanta Friday morning, it will be reduced to a tropical storm. Right now, portions of Georgia, including Atlanta, are under a Tropical Storm Watch. This will likely get upgraded to a warning later today or tomorrow. If youand#39;re thinking about heading out of Southeast Louisiana late Thursday or early Friday, youand#39;ll possibly run into some very heavy rain and strong winds if the arrival time is before 8 a.m. There is also the possibility of tornadoes and flooding. After that, the storm continues to the north but could bring more rain Sunday as it continues to rotate.
