The Green Bay Packers have an off day after starting training camp on Monday. Among the notable storylines from the very beginning of camp was that franchise quarterback Jordan Love has reported to the team and is present but will not practice until he and the organization come to terms on a new contract extension. Earlier this offseason, both Love and general manager Brian Gutekunst had expressed their desires for a contract to be agreed upon by the start of training camp.
Of course, that has not happened.
It should be noted that the negotiations are not hostile. There is no doubt that Love is going to be extended. The details of the contract, though, are taking a little longer than expected to iron out.
Green Bay Packers Jordan Love Could Become the Highest Paid Player in the NFL
The Packers took a huge risk when they traded away four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets last offseason to make way for Love to start. After three years, though, Green Bay faced a future with Love under center or risked losing him as they ran with Rodgers.
Since they drafted Love to be the heir apparent to Rodgers, the decision was made to move on from the future Pro Football Hall of Famer.
Fortunately for Green Bay, the risk proved to be worth it. Love completed 64.2% of his passes for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns (which was the second-most in the NFL), 11 interceptions, and a passer rating of 96.1.
In 2022, Rodgers was playing in the first year of his three-year $150 million contract that the Packers gave him. He completed 64.6% of his passes for 3,695 yards, 26 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and a passer rating of 91.1.
In other words, Love was an upgrade over the quarterback to whom Green Bay was paying $50 million per year.
Earlier this offseason, the Jacksonville Jaguars gave their young star quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, a five-year contract that is worth $55 million per season.
Love outperformed Lawrence, too:
Jordan Love Trevor Lawrence Completion % 64.2% 65.6% Passing Yards 4,159 4,016 Touchdowns 32 21 Interceptions 11 14 Passer Rating 96.1 88.5
Based on his on-field production compared to that of his peers, and considering how much they are being paid, one can come to the easy conclusion that Love’s next contract could very well make him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.
NFL Insider Provides Positive Update on Jordan Love Contract Talks with the Green Bay Packers
Yesterday, there was a report from Dianna Russini of The Athletic which stated that Love and the Packers were weeks away from coming to an agreement. However, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the two sides are actually pretty close to a contract:
As the two sides have been negotiating for months, one would certainly hope that they are closer to a deal rather than being weeks away from one.
Regardless of when it gets done, though, fans can take solace in the fact that they have their next franchise quarterback and that he is not going anywhere.
