Now friends, neighbors, and family members are lifting up two moms who are dealing with an unimaginable loss, and the community is hoping the cash reward will lead to a quick arrest.
On Wednesday dozens of friends, family, and neighbors gathered on Sparks Street in southwest Atlanta to lift up 13-year-old Jakody Davis, and 12-year-old Dj Dontavious Davis.
Both teens were shot outside an apartment complex early Tuesday morning alongside their friend Lamon Freeman who had just turned 13.
“Lord Jesus we just ask you for help. We pray lord that you would come quickly, that you would help us and bring healing, that you would bring peace to a grief-stricken community,” a local pastor said during a prayer at the balloon release gathering.
Family friends said Dontavious and his brother Jakody went to the apartment on Sparks Street to wish Freeman a happy birthday and when all three boys were leaving the apartment they were met with gunfire.
Freeman and Jakody both died in the shooting.
“It was a joy to have Jakody in our lives. To take him to church with us,” a local pastor said.
Jakody’s brother Dontavious made it to the hospital where he’s now recovering.
Police are now offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and many mothers in the community hope the reward will bring justice.
“The suspect needs to be arrested but unfortunately money doesn’t bring their kids back, money doesn’t take the pain away, and money doesn’t solve the solution,” Mothers Against Gang Violence Spokesperson, Tekesia Shields said.
Anyone with information on the case can submit a tip anonymously to the Crime Stoppers Atlanta tip line at 404-577-TIPS (8477), online www.StopCrimeAtl.org, or by texting CSA and the tip to CRIMES (274637).
