WalletHub's Chip Lupo, an analyst with the personal finance website, said safety goes beyond crime rates, auto fatality rates or natural disaster risks.

"The safest cities in America protect residents from these threats of bodily harm and property damage, but on top of that, they also help secure people’s financial safety," Lupos said in the report. "Financial safety includes things like minimizing the risk of fraud and identity theft, keeping the population employed and insured and combating homelessness.”

Of at least 180 cities studied, three Georgia towns made the list: Atlanta, Augusta and Columbus.

Here is how their rankings break down:

South Burlington, Vermont is the safest city in the U.S., followed by Casper, Wyoming and Warwick, Rhode Island, according to the ranking.

Memphis, Tennessee, is the least safe town after Detroit, Michigan and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, according to the ranking.
