ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A busy Coweta County road is back open after an oil spill shut it down for several hours.

According to Newnan police, a tanker truck carrying used motor oil had some sort of maintenance issue Friday morning. When the driver hit the breaks the oil started spilling from the top and onto the road.

Officials said the used motor oil was extremely contaminated but was not an EPA concern because it remained contained to the roadway.

The truck belonged to Universal Environmental Services, which is a used oil collection and processing company according to their website.

Atlanta News First spoke with a Universal Environmental Services company representative by phone Friday who said the incident did not involve any other cars and the truck did not tip over. They declined to speak further or provide any other details about the spill.

The road reopened around 3 p.m. on Friday.
