Mary Lucille (Lucy) Oaks Moore of Marietta, GA (formerly of Austin, TX) passed away at the age of 94 on July 7, 2024.
Lucy was born on February 4, 1930 in Jackson, Mississippi to Dewitt Talmage Oaks and Eusebia Lucille Savage Oaks. Raised in Cleveland, Mississippi, she was the daughter of a school principal and a stay at home mother. Lucy enjoyed music and playing basketball in high school and graduated as valedictorian of her high school class. She chose to pursue her love of music in college by studying elementary school music. In 1950, she graduated from Delta State University at the age of 20 with a degree in elementary music education. Lucy taught elementary music in Greenwood and Lexington, Mississippi and it was there that she met William (Bill) Moore whom she married on June 20, 1954. Bill and Lucy moved to Austin, TX to begin married life where over the years she worked as a secretary for the University of Texas, the Texas State Youth Commission, and Page Southerland Page
Architects while raising their daughter, Julie. Lucy was a devoted wife, mother, and friend. She was an active parent who served as a Girl Scout volunteer, PTA member, and band parent. She attended every recital, band concert, choir concert, and drama production with which Julie was involved. Lucy was also a beloved hostess who enjoyed opening up her home to friends and young people. Throughout her life she maintained her love of music by singing in her church choir and going to as many live music events as she could. She also enjoyed traveling (including Hawaii, Italy, and many trips around the U.S.) and Saturday night Mexican food with close friends. Lucy and Bill were season ticket holders for Texas Longhorn basketball and football games, building lifelong friendships with fans in Section 105. Lucy and Bill were married for 62 years until his death in 2016. After Bill’s passing, Lucy moved to Marietta, GA to be near her daughter, Julie.
Lucy was preceded in death by her parents Dewitt and Eusebia Oaks, her husband, William (Bill) Moore, and a beloved daughter, Katherine (Kathy) Oaks Moore. She is survived by daughter Julie Ann Moore of Kennesaw, Georgia.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Central Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, GA at 2:00pm on Sunday, August 11, 2024. Parking is in the Department of Public Safety Parking Garage at 180 Central Avenue, SW. Handicap parking is available in front of the church at 201 Washington St. SW. The service will be livestreamed on Central Presbyterian Church’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. A reception will follow the service at the church in Tull Hall.
