ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A man has been sentenced to life in prison — plus five years — for shooting and killing his roommate and coworker in 2023, according to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office.

Originally from Greensboro, North Carolina, 25-year-old Cedric Collins was found guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony last Thursday.

The case dates back to Oct. 20, 2023, when police were called to the 3100 block of Westwood Drive in Tucker. They found the victim, James Broadnax, shot multiple times inside a still-running Dodge Charger. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the district attorney’s office.

Witnesses said Broadnax and Collins were two of four people who lived inside the home. The men all worked for an appliance company, frequently using box trucks to transport washers and dryers.

According to witnesses, the two got into a fight at the house earlier in the day. Collins left in a box truck, and Broadnax left shortly after.

In an interview with detectives, Collins said he shot Broadnax because he was following him on the road. He got out of the truck, asked the victim what he was doing and emptied his entire 16-bullet magazine into the car, the district attorney’s office said. Broadnax was found to be unarmed.

Collins was arrested when he came back home in his box truck after the shooting. Detectives would later match the bullets to his gun, according to the district attorney’s office.
