Despite adding 4,900 jobs from May to June, the Austin-Round Rock metro area saw a slight uptick in its unemployment rate, rising to 3.8%, according to a report from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). KXAN notes that this figure represents 56,143 unemployed residents. In spite of the increase, Austin still managed to maintain a lower unemployment rate than the statewide figure of 4.5% and the national rate of 4.3%.
Job increases were observed in several sectors within the Austin metro from May to June, with mining, logging, and construction leading the pack by adding 1,600 jobs. The construction sector, alongside trade and manufacturing, was a notable contributor to the region's growth. However, not every sector experienced growth; professional business services faced a decline of 1,100 jobs in the same period, as stated by KXAN.
Furthermore, Texas as a whole celebrated a new benchmark, with its civilian labor force reaching a record high of 15,311,500 in June, an event CBS Austin reports as indicative of healthy labor market dynamics. Over the last year, the state added 267,400 non-farm jobs, excelling past national employment growth rates.
