ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Crews have repaired a large water main break that impacted service to several schools, businesses and homes in southeast Atlanta, according to the city’s watershed management department.

In a 6:30 a.m. update on Saturday, the department said a private contractor damaged the 24-inch pipe at the intersection of Moury Avenue and Jonesboro Road. The outage impacted about 70 homes, five businesses, two hydrants and at least four schools.

Those schools included Hank Aaron New Beginnings Academy, Humphries Elementary School, Price Middle School and Slater Elementary School. On Friday, Atlanta Public Schools (APS) officials said water trucks were sent to the schools and students were given bottled water.

“Our school day will continue as scheduled, as we do not expect any disruptions to instruction,” the district said in a statement.

The cameras outside of Rio’s Italian Ice and Ice Cream caught the moments when water flooded Jonesboro Road.

“We heard a loud bang and then the water came rushing down the street,” store owner Destry Carrasquillo said.

Carrasquillo said the water main break caused him to close his business on Thursday and remain closed on Friday.

“I have to have staff stay home, so we can’t make money,” he said. “Not only are we a store in the neighborhood, but we hire people in the neighborhood.”

According to Carrasquillo, his business was also impacted in May when there were major service disruptions across the city after water main breaks.
