Atlanta, GA — Atlanta Public Schools and DeKalb County Schools will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 26, and Friday, Sept. 27, due to expected severe weather from Hurricane Helene.
Atlanta district office employees will work remotely the rest of the week. The Atlanta school district plans to provide an update on Friday afternoon for activities currently planned for Saturday, Sept. 28, according to a press release.
DeKalb County Schools is taking a similar approach.
“In response to the severe weather conditions caused by Hurricane Helene, all DeKalb County School District schools will be closed on Thursday, September 26, and Friday, September 27,” the school district announced. “This closure includes all school-based, district-wide, extracurricular, and athletic events. Superintendent Dr. Devon Q. Horton emphasized that the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families remain the District’s top priority. After careful consideration of weather forecasts predicting dangerous conditions such as high winds, power outages, and hazardous roads, the decision was made to close schools and cancel activities.”
DeKalb School District employees will work remotely on Thursday and Friday.
City Schools of Decatur is on fall break this week. District offices will be closed on Sept. 26-27.
Fulton County Schools will be closed on Friday, and after-school activities will be canceled for Thursday.
“On Thursday, September 26, all extracurricular activities involving FCS students are canceled,” the announcement from Fulton County says. “This includes after-school and evening meetings, extended day programs/after-school care, tutorials, clubs, athletic practices and games as well as other events specified by individual schools. Parents who have children in after-school programs should be prepared to pick them up by the regular school dismissal time or make other arrangements.
“In addition, all schools and administrative offices will be closed Friday, September 27, due to expected impacts from the storm. Students should not report to school. While there is no expectation of remote learning for students, this is a good time for homework completion and recovering missing work. All after-school meetings, extended day programs, clubs, athletic games, practices, and events also are canceled. The district will announce by 4 p.m. on Friday whether weekend activities will be held after campus conditions can be evaluated.”
Tropical Storm Helene has been officially upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane and will maintain tropical storm force as it moves through Georgia, Decaturish media partner Atlanta News First reported.
“Over the next 24 hours, Helene is forecast to become a category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 130mph,” ANF reported.
