ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The world’s largest single-day sporting event is returning to Atlanta in 2028, according to a sports trade journal report.
NFL leaders plan to award Super Bowl LXII to Atlanta when owners meet next month in that city, according to Sports Business Journal.
The last time Atlanta hosted the game was in 2019. NFL owners are set to meet on Oct. 15.
If awarded, this would be the fourth Super Bowl held in Atlanta. In 1993, the then-new Georgia Dome hosted Super Bowl 28 between the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills; the Cowboys won 30-13.
On Jan. 30, 2000, the then-St. Louis Rams defeated the Tennessee Titans 23-16, surviving a last-second goal line assault from the former Houston Oilers in what is arguably the greatest finish ever to an NFL championship game.
Hours after the thrilling finish, two men were stabbed to death in a fight outside a Buckhead nightclub when Ray Lewis — a Baltimore Ravens linebacker already well on his way to an NFL Hall of Fame career — was leaving Cobalt Lounge.
Eleven days later, Lewis and two friends — Joseph Sweeting and Reginald Oakley — were arrested and charged with double murder. Lewis later pleaded guilty to obstruction, received one year’s probation and was fined by the NFL for $250,000. Less than a year later, he would be named MVP of Super Bowl 36, which was won by the Baltimore Ravens.
In 2019, the New England Patriots defeated the now-Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 53, 13-3.
The upcoming Super Bowls will be in New Orleans (2025); Santa Clara, California (2026); and Los Angeles (2027).
