5 Places Most Likely to See Home Prices Plunge by 2025

U.S. home prices rose yet again in August — but gains are slowing, a trend that is likely to continue into early next year, according to property analytics firm CoreLogic.

U.S. home prices rose yet again in August — but gains are slowing, a trend that is likely to continue into early next year, according to property analytics firm CoreLogic.

From August 2023 to August 2024, home prices rose 3.9% nationwide. On a monthly basis, prices fell by 0.1% in August 2024 compared with where they were in July 2024.

CoreLogic says that by next spring, year-over-year home price gains are likely to be less than 1%.

In a summary of the findings, Selma Hepp — chief economist for CoreLogic — says:

“The combined impact of high prices and high mortgage rates kept a lid on price growth, with annual gains falling to the lowest level in a year and the monthly gain falling well below what is typically observed in August.”

CoreLogic says some cities are especially vulnerable to future price declines, including the following markets.

Gainesville, FL

There is a youth movement in the college town of Gainesville: The north-central Florida city is among “10 Cities Generation Z Is Taking Over.”

Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville, FL

If you want to move to the Sunshine State, this stretch of the Atlantic coast might be the right region for you: Both Palm Bay and Melbourne appear on the list of “6 of the Cheapest Places to Live in Florida.”

Salt Lake City, UT

This housing market’s likelihood of a price decline over the next 12 months: Very high (more than 70% probability)

Salt Lake City has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years. In fact, Utah’s largest city placed No. 1 in the story “These 15 American Cities Have Added the Most Construction Jobs.”

Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA

This housing market’s likelihood of a price decline over the next 12 months: Very high (more than 70% probability)
