The Atlanta Falcons have absolutely stunned the Philadelphia Eagles, pulling out a 22-21 win at Lincoln Financial Field to finish Week 2 in the NFL.
Kirk Cousins capped a six-play, 70-yard drive, orchestrated without any timeouts, with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Drake London with 34 seconds left to win the game. Following an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on London's celebration, Younghoe Koo converted a 48-yard extra point to complete the turnaround.
C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Saquon Barkley's drop in the final two minutes: "It's football, bro. S--- happens. You can't fault a guy for making one mistake. I mean, it's other things that led to a loss, but you can't fault one guy and put one game, one thing on somebody's shoulders for the whole game."
Saquon Barkley had the game in his hands. If he catches Jalen Hurts' short pass on third-and-3 with less than two minutes left, the Eagles run out the clock uninhibited and win the game.
Instead, he dropped the catch, forcing the Eagles to kick the field goal and give the ball back to the Falcons. Cousins took care of the rest.
This has to present a small amount of relief to Giants fans who have been suffering through everyone lambasting their franchise for letting Saquon go.
Here are the six plays that won the Falcons this game:
Kirk Cousins to Kyle Pitts for 11 yards
Cousins to Darnell Mooney for 21 yards
Cousins to Mooney for 26 yards
Cousins to Drake London for five yards
Cousins incomplete to Ray-Ray McCloud in the end zone
Cousins seven-yard touchdown to London
Perhaps the most surprising element of the drive was how easy it looked. The Eagles didn't get any pressure on Cousins throughout, and the quarterback just picked their defense apart.
Over on our discussion page, our subscribers are having reasoned, well-intentioned reactions to that stunning ending...
Anonymous: This is the loss Eagle fans deserve
Frist L.: Awesome to see Sirianni looking so arrogant and celebratory and then get punched in the mouth by Cousins of all people
Erik P.: That was the worse defensive play-calling I've ever seen. And how much does Slay make?
Louis B.: When you can kick a FG to stay up one score you have to do it
According to Next Gen Stats, the Falcons had just a 0.7 percent chance of winning this game with 1:56 left in the fourth quarter.
Their comeback from that position stands as the seventh-most improbable victory since Next Gen Stats began tracking win probabilities in 2016.
