ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The middle of September marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. Running until mid-October, Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes and celebrates all forms of Hispanic culture.
What is Hispanic Heritage Month?
Hispanic Heritage Month is observed every year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. It celebrates the “histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America,” according to the Hispanic Heritage Month website.
Sept. 15 also marks the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, the website states. Mexico celebrates its independence on Sept. 16 and Chile celebrates its independence on Sept. 18.
What is metro Atlanta doing to honor Hispanic Heritage Month?
On Sunday, hundreds gathered for the Fiestas Patrias celebration at Plaza Fiesta on Buford Highway.
There are many other events happening around metro Atlanta in the coming weeks to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Here are some of them:
50 Most Influential Latinos in Georgia
The Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will hold the annual celebration recognizing leaders in the Latino community in Georgia at Truist Park, located at 755 Battery Avenue SE in Cobb County, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20. You can find more information and get tickets here.
Celebrating Mexico with Alma Mexicana
The “journey through the beautiful and diverse cultures of Mexico through music and dance” will be held at the Aurora Theatre, located at 128 E Pike St, Lawrenceville, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21. More information and tickets can be found here.
Hispanic Heritage Fiesta
To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, you can “immerse yourself in cultural activities, savor delicious food, and enjoy lively entertainment for the whole family” at the Hispanic Heritage Fiesta, hosted by the DeKalb County School District. The event will take place at Doraville United Elementary School, located at 3630 Shallowford Road in Doraville, from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21. More information can be found here.
Hispanic Heritage Celebration
The event hosted by Smyrna Parks and Recreation will feature a DJ, live performances, food, local vendors, kids activities, a screening of the film “Blue Beetle” and more. It starts at 2 p.m. at the Smyrna Community Center, located at 1250 Powder Springs Street in Smyrna.
The movie starts at 6 p.m., the concert starts at 6:30 p.m., and they’re both free. You can find more information about the event here.
Club Babalú: Clásicos del Merengue
The Aurora Theatre will host a night of live music and dancing featuring Merengue, a style of music and dance from Dominican Republic, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, at 125 N Clayton Street in Lawrenceville. More information and tickets can be found here.
Latino Leaders Summit
This annual leadership event “is the perfect opportunity to enhance your skills and knowledge within the community.” Attendees are invited to participate in “great conversations and the chance to construct a solid foundation for your professional and personal growth.” The event is being held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 241 Ralph McGill Blvd NE in Atlanta. The Gwinnett County Public Library located at 4817 Church Street NW in Lilburn will host the “multicultural experience to learn about the folkloric dances and traditions of Mexican culture” from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 28. More information can be found here.
Latino Fest Gainesville
The celebration of local Latino culture, art, music and food will take place from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Midland Greenway, located at 682 Grove Street in Gainesville. The Hispanic Heritage Festival of Peachtree City is a free community event hosted by the nonprofit Latino Alliance of South Atlanta in honor of Hispanic Heritage month. Attendees can enjoy “unique continuous entertainment that includes Hispanic music and dance performances.” The event is being held at Drake Field, located at 155 Willowbend Road at Peachtree City from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5. City of Chamblee’s Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month Resource Fair: Atlanta United Watch Party
The City of Chamblee is hosting this free watch party for the Atlanta United-New York Red Bulls game from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Plaza Fiesta, located at 4166 Buford Highway in Chamblee. More information can be found here.
8th Annual Conyers Latin Festival
The UNIDOS Latino Association is hosting the free annual celebration, which “observes the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.” The event will take place from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 901 Railroad Street in Conyers. Mini Acting Camp: Coco
The Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville is hosting a two-day acting camp based on the film “Coco” from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, and Friday, Oct. 11, at 128 E Pike Street. 2024 Hispanic Heritage Month Luncheon
