ATLANTA, Ga. (WALB) - The state school superintendent of the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) released a statement after receiving criticism for controversy around state funding on Advanced Placement (AP) African American Studies.

According to the press release, there has been a non-AP African American Studies course code in the catalog of state-funded courses since 2020.

School districts that use this course code will receive state funding. The districts who choose to do so may teach some or all of the standards in the AP African American Studies course using this code, and students must take the associated AP exam.

The Associated Press reported that some school districts have canceled plans to teach the AP version of the course to high schoolers.
