CARROLLTON, Ga. — In less than a month, students around metro Atlanta will be heading back to the classroom, and an organization that helps low-income teachers make sure they have school supplies in their classrooms might not be able to hold a yearly giveaway.
Paraprofessional QV Thomas is busy not only teaching and being a faith leader but also co-founding an education charity called ED After Hours.
“I just want to be able to give to those that give their all is what ED After Hours is all about," Thomas explained.
Since 2022, Thomas' organization has been hosting giveaway events, lunches, and support groups for teachers across the metro Atlanta area.
Thomas personally funded part of her organization but recently had some financial setbacks. In addition, she said fundraisers have brought in less money than anticipated. With their biggest annual teacher supply giveaway set for August 3, she's concerned that it may not happen.
"We are literally miles away from where we need to be. We have in all of this year raised somewhere in the tune of $400 which is nearly nothing when you talk about buying school supplies," Thomas said.
As the clock ticks, Thomas said she's worried this could mean the end of something she holds so dear. But with the heart of an educator, she said she's going to keep pushing to make an impact.
“Education is probably one of the most strenuous jobs in this climate, and I just want to make an educator smile," Thomas said while holding back tears.
