MARIETTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The Cobb County Board of Education has pulled the plug on a planned events center, citing budgeting concerns and rising construction costs.

The school board unanimously voted to cancel building a $50 million multipurpose facility.

In March 2023, the school board approved the project, which was set to be built on Glover Street next to the school district’s headquarters.

Superintendent Chris Ragsdale recommended stopping the project, citing “rising costs and a slow national growth rate,” the school district said in a release.

“The economy has changed a lot in the last two years, and our financial decisions have to change with it,” Ragsdale said. “For the last five years, as we have been planning for the multipurpose center, the economy across the country was growing. Fast forward to the middle of 2024, and the economy has slowed to a crawl.”

The 8,000-seat building was being designed to host graduations, science fairs and other types of events.
